Strategic Choice
GMRS vs. Ham Radio: The Prepper’s Dilemma
If you are building a communication plan for your family or neighborhood, you have to choose a “language.” In the US and many other regions, that choice usually comes down to GMRS or Ham Radio.
| Feature | GMRS | Ham Radio |
|---|---|---|
| Difficulty | Easy (No Test) | Moderate (Exam Required) |
| Licensing | Covers entire family | Individual only |
| Range | Local/Regional | Global (with HF) |
When to Choose GMRS
GMRS is the winner for Group Coordination. If you want to talk to your wife while she’s at the store, or coordinate a 3-car convoy, GMRS is perfect. You buy one license, and everyone in your household can legally use the radios.
When to Choose Ham Radio
Ham Radio is for Information Gathering. If you want to hear what is happening 50 miles away, or communicate with other preppers across the country during a total blackout, Ham is your only option.
The “Pro” Strategy
The best preppers use both. GMRS for internal family talk, and Ham Radio for external intelligence and long-distance emergency calls.
