Grayl vs. Lifestraw Go: Do you need a purifier or a filter?

Water bottles with built-in filtration are the most convenient way to secure water on the move. However, there is a critical distinction between the two market leaders: the Lifestraw Go is a water filter, while the Grayl Geopress is a water purifier.

This distinction determines whether you are safe from viruses (like Norovirus or Hepatitis A) or just bacteria and protozoa (like E. coli and Giardia).

The Virus Factor: Why Grayl Wins for Prepping

The Grayl Geopress forces water through an electro-adsorptive media that captures viruses. If your threat model includes international travel, urban disasters (sewage contamination), or floodwaters, you need a purifier.

The Lifestraw Go uses hollow fiber membrane technology. It effectively removes bacteria and parasites found in clean-looking mountain streams, but it allows viruses to pass through. It is excellent for hiking, but incomplete for urban survival.
