Emergency Ration Bars: Datrex vs. SOS vs. Mainstay

When packing a survival kit for a car or small bug-out bag, space and weight are premium. You cannot pack bulky freeze-dried cans or heavy MREs.
The solution is the Emergency Food Ration Bar.

These are dense, vacuum-sealed blocks of fortified shortbread that pack 2,400 to 3,600 calories into a brick the size of a paperback book.
They are designed to survive freezing winters and scorching summers in a trunk for 5 years without spoiling.

Standard shelf life is 5 years (US Coast Guard approved).

Non-thirst provoking formulas (low sodium/protein).

Freeze/thaw stable: Perfect for vehicle storage.

The “Non-Thirst” Factor

Unlike protein bars or granola, emergency rations are scientifically formulated to be non-thirst provoking. They are high in fat and sugar but low in protein and sodium.
This is critical because in a life-raft or stranded vehicle scenario, water is often scarce. Eating a salty snack would dehydrate you faster; these bars provide fuel without demanding extra water.

Brand Comparison: Flavor & Texture

Datrex bars are widely considered the best tasting. They have a distinct coconut flavor and a crumbly, cookie-like texture. Crucially, they are individually wrapped inside the main foil pouch, so you can eat one bar without exposing the rest to air.

SOS and Mainstay bars tend to be harder and sweeter (lemon or vanilla). They often come as a single solid block that you must break apart. Once opened, the entire block is exposed, which makes rationing messier.

A Note on “Starvation Mode”

A 3,600 calorie brick is technically enough to keep one person alive for 3 days (1,200 calories/day). It won’t be comfortable—you will be hungry—but it will prevent starvation. For a 72-hour kit, one brick per person is the standard minimum.
