Ham Radio Prep Review: Is It Worth It for the FCC Amateur Radio Exam?

Ham Radio Prep (Online Course Review)

Short answer: Ham Radio Prep is a structured online study platform for the U.S. FCC amateur radio exams. It combines video lessons, written material, quizzes and unlimited practice exams, making it a useful option for beginners who prefer guided study instead of preparing entirely from a book or question pool.

For emergency preparedness, amateur radio can provide an independent communications capability when cellular networks or internet services are unavailable or overloaded. But transmitting on amateur frequencies requires the appropriate FCC amateur radio license, making exam preparation the first step for most new operators in the United States.

Technician is the entry-level U.S. amateur radio license.
Ham Radio Prep offers Technician, General and Amateur Extra exam-preparation courses.
The Technician course has been updated for the 2026–2030 question pool.

What is Ham Radio Prep?

Ham Radio Prep is an online training platform designed primarily to prepare students for the FCC amateur radio licensing exams.

Its license-preparation courses cover the three current U.S. amateur radio license classes:

  • Technician: the starting point for new U.S. amateur radio operators.
  • General: expands operating privileges, particularly on HF bands.
  • Amateur Extra: the highest current U.S. amateur radio license class, providing the broadest amateur-frequency privileges.

The platform uses a combination of instructional videos, written lessons, quizzes, learning activities and practice examinations rather than relying solely on memorizing a printed question-and-answer list.

Important 2026 update: the Technician exam changed

Anyone preparing for the Technician examination should make sure their study material is current.

The new 2026–2030 Technician question pool took effect on July 1, 2026. Ham Radio Prep has released an updated Technician course specifically for the new pool.

This matters when buying used manuals or following older online study material. Resources designed around the previous 2022–2026 pool may contain obsolete questions and should not be your primary preparation source for a current exam.

What does the course include?

Feature Ham Radio Prep Why it matters
Video lessons Yes Useful for learners who prefer explanation rather than question memorization alone
Written lessons Yes Provides material that can be reviewed at your own pace
Quizzes Yes Reinforces material as you progress
Practice exams Unlimited Allows repeated exam preparation before scheduling the real test
Current Technician pool 2026–2030 Relevant for Technician exams taken from July 1, 2026
Access Lifetime access according to Ham Radio Prep Allows later review without a recurring study subscription
License levels Technician, General and Amateur Extra Allows progression through the U.S. amateur-radio license structure

Ham Radio Prep vs. studying from a book

You do not need a commercial online course to pass an amateur radio examination. Self-study using current manuals, official question-pool material and practice examinations remains a viable route.

The difference is primarily structure.

Study method Advantages Limitations
Ham Radio Prep Structured lessons, video, quizzes and integrated practice exams Costs more than using free study resources
Printed study manual Works offline, easy to annotate and useful as a later reference Less interactive and can become outdated when question pools change
Free question-pool study Lowest-cost approach Requires more self-direction and can encourage memorization without understanding

Our preference: use structured exam preparation to get licensed efficiently, but keep a good radio reference book or offline documentation after passing. Passing the examination and becoming a competent radio operator are different objectives.

How long does Ham Radio Prep take?

There is no fixed study time that guarantees passing the Technician examination. Previous electronics knowledge, radio experience and study habits can substantially change the amount of preparation required.

Ham Radio Prep states that many students complete its Technician material in approximately 5–10 hours. Treat this as a provider-reported estimate rather than a guaranteed completion time.

A better readiness test is performance on realistic practice examinations. Continue studying until you can repeatedly pass practice exams with a comfortable margin rather than scheduling the real examination solely because you have completed a certain number of study hours.

The Ham Radio Prep guarantee

Ham Radio Prep currently advertises a first-attempt exam guarantee. According to the company’s published terms, students seeking the guarantee must complete the course chapters and achieve at least 84% on one practice examination.

If an eligible student then fails the FCC examination on the first attempt, Ham Radio Prep states that it will refund the course and cover the examination fee.

Guarantee terms can change, so check the current conditions directly with Ham Radio Prep before purchasing rather than treating this page as the contractual terms of the offer.

Which Ham Radio Prep course should you choose?

For someone who has never held a U.S. amateur radio license, start with Technician. There is little reason for a beginner to begin by studying General or Amateur Extra material before establishing the Technician foundation.

If you already expect to progress beyond Technician, Ham Radio Prep also offers an All Access option covering Technician, General and Amateur Extra. Compare its current price with buying the individual courses before purchasing because offers and bundles can change.

Why amateur radio matters for preparedness

Amateur radio should not be treated as a replacement for normal communications. It works best as another layer in a communications plan.

Depending on license privileges, equipment, frequencies, propagation and local infrastructure, amateur radio can support local communications, repeater access, longer-distance HF communication and organized emergency communications.

That makes it particularly useful within a PACE communications plan: Primary, Alternate, Contingency and Emergency communications methods should not all depend on the same infrastructure.

The important distinction is that owning a radio does not create communications capability by itself. Licensing, programming, antenna knowledge, operating practice and familiarity with local operators and repeaters are considerably more valuable than leaving an unfamiliar radio in an emergency kit.

Passing the exam is only the beginning

Ham Radio Prep is fundamentally an exam-preparation product. Passing the FCC examination demonstrates the knowledge required for licensing, but it does not automatically make someone an experienced radio operator.

After becoming licensed, practice:

  • programming and operating your actual radios;
  • simplex communication;
  • using local repeaters;
  • selecting and positioning antennas;
  • understanding your radio’s power requirements;
  • keeping important frequencies and contact information offline;
  • participating in local amateur-radio nets;
  • integrating amateur radio into your household communications plan.

If emergency communications are your primary reason for becoming licensed, practical operating experience after the examination is at least as important as the exam preparation itself.

Frequently asked questions

Is Ham Radio Prep worth it?

It can be worthwhile if you prefer a structured online course with videos, lessons, quizzes and practice exams. If you are comfortable organizing your own study using current manuals and question-pool resources, a paid course is not essential.

Can you get a ham radio license entirely online?

Study can be completed online, and remote examination options may be available through Volunteer Examiner organizations. Ham Radio Prep prepares students for the examination; it does not itself replace the FCC licensing process.

Which ham radio license should a beginner get?

Technician is the entry-level FCC amateur radio license and the normal starting point for a new U.S. operator. General and Amateur Extra provide progressively broader operating privileges.

Does Ham Radio Prep use the current Technician questions?

Yes. Its current Technician course has been updated for the 2026–2030 question pool that took effect on July 1, 2026.

Does passing the Technician exam make you ready for emergency communications?

Not by itself. Licensing provides the legal and technical foundation. Effective emergency communications also require practical radio operation, appropriate equipment, antenna knowledge, local frequency information and regular practice.

Our verdict

Ham Radio Prep is best suited to beginners who want a structured route through the FCC licensing material. Its combination of short lessons, quizzes and practice examinations removes much of the organizational work involved in self-study.

For preparedness, however, we would not stop after passing the exam. Use the course to obtain the license, then move immediately into practical operating experience and integrate amateur radio into a broader communications plan.
