Best Solar Security Cameras for Preparedness: Reolink vs. Eufy

Short answer: a solar security camera can reduce dependence on household mains power, but it does not create a zero-dependence security system. Camera batteries still depend on available sunlight and usage, remote viewing usually depends on networking, and some systems require a hub or cellular service. For preparedness, prioritize local recording, realistic power redundancy and clear understanding of what still works when the internet is down.

Reolink vs. Eufy: preparedness differences

Reolink Argus 3 Pro: local microSD flexibility

Current Reolink documentation lists the Argus 3 Pro at 5MP (2880 × 1620), with rechargeable battery power, optional solar charging, dual-band Wi-Fi on current versions, motion-triggered recording and local microSD support. Reolink also specifies IP65 weather resistance.

For preparedness, the important feature is not the resolution headline. Local recording means footage does not have to exist only in a cloud account. However, remote live viewing and push notifications still depend on the camera’s network path and the supporting app/service.

eufyCam S330: integrated solar and HomeBase

Eufy’s current S330 material lists 4K video, integrated solar charging and local storage through HomeBase 3, with expandable storage up to 16 TB when suitable additional storage is installed. Eufy states that the add-on S330 camera requires HomeBase 3 to operate.

That hub architecture can centralize recordings, but it also means the camera is part of a system rather than a fully independent device. Include the HomeBase and its power/network requirements in any outage plan.

Reolink Go PT Ultra: when Wi-Fi is not available

A cellular security camera can make sense for a remote property, outbuilding or other location without fixed Wi-Fi. The tradeoff is dependence on cellular coverage, a compatible SIM/data plan and the continued operation of the mobile network.

What happens when the internet goes down?

Separate “internet down” from “local network down.” A camera with local storage may continue recording motion events even when remote access is unavailable, depending on the model and configuration. If the router, hub or camera loses power, behavior can be different. Test by deliberately disconnecting the WAN connection and then, separately, the local network to see what your installed system actually retains.

Solar does not mean unlimited power

Manufacturer “forever power” language assumes sufficient direct sunlight and a usage profile within the solar budget. Shade, winter sun angle, frequent motion events, live viewing and cold temperatures can increase battery drain or reduce charging. Position the panel or camera for realistic year-round conditions and monitor battery state.

Security cameras are detection, not physical security

Cameras can document and alert, but they do not physically delay entry. A layered home-security plan also considers doors, windows, lighting, perimeter awareness and household procedures.
